General Training Writing has two tasks, a letter and an essay, in 60 minutes. Your first band score is free, with corrections on your own sentences.

Practise one part

Write a letter to the shop manager.
- describe the problem with the equipment
- explain what happened when you phoned the shop
- say what you would like the manager to do

Writing Task 1, the letter
Write a letter about an everyday situation, to a friend, a manager or a company.
About 20 minutes, at least 150 words

Write an essay that answers a question on a topic, as in Academic.

Time and style

Time

60 minutes for both tasks, on one screen. You can move between them at any time.

Style

Task 1 is a letter, as formal as the task asks. Task 2 is an essay in full paragraphs.

Criteria

Task achievement in Task 1 or task response in Task 2, plus coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy

How it is scored

Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1. Our engine marks both tasks on the four IELTS criteria and corrects your own sentences.

How to get a higher band

Plan your hour
Spend about 20 minutes on the letter and 40 on the essay, because Task 2 is worth more.
Write to your reader
The task says who you are writing to. Be friendly with a friend, and polite and formal with a company.
Cover all three points
Task 1 gives you three points. Write a paragraph for each one.
Answer every part
Many Task 2 questions ask two things. Answer both, or your task response band stays low.

How is it different from Academic Writing?

Task 1 is a letter, not a description of a chart. Task 2 is an essay in both tests, marked the same way.

Do I get feedback on my writing for free?

Yes, on your first letter and your first essay. You get a band for each of the four criteria and corrections on your own sentences. After that, marking is part of Pro.

How accurate is the band score?

Where do the questions come from?

The letters and the essays come from the General Training tests in Cambridge IELTS 4 to 20.
