IELTS Reading, Part 1

Read the text and answer questions 1 to 13.

The town library

When the town library opened in 1890, it held 400 books and was open on two evenings a week. Most of its first readers were factory workers who had left school early.

Within ten years the collection had grown to over 3,000 books. A reading room for children was added in 1899, and the library began to open every day.

Question types

Multiple choice, matching, headings, gap-fill, and statements you mark True, False or Not Given

How it is scored

Each correct answer gets 1 mark, and your score out of 40 becomes a band. General Training has its own table, which needs more correct answers than Academic for the same band. You see your band and every answer when you submit.

How to get more answers right

  1. Save time for Section 3

The last text is the longest and the hardest. Don't spend too long on the short texts.
  2. Look for names and numbers

Section 1 often asks about times, prices and places. Find them in the text first.
  3. Know False from Not Given

False means the text says the opposite. Not Given means the text doesn't say either way.
  4. Answer every question

A blank can't get a mark. If you're not sure, choose your best answer.

Questions fréquentes

Is General Training reading easier than Academic?

The texts are easier, but you need more correct answers for the same band. For example, 30 correct is band 6.0 in General Training and 7.0 in Academic.

How is my reading band worked out?

Your correct answers out of 40 turn into a band with the General Training table. For example, 30 correct is band 6.0, 34 is 7.0 and 38 is 8.0.

Where do the papers come from?

Test takers shared them after real General Training tests from 2023 to 2026. Each paper has three sections and 40 questions, as on test day.
