What IELTS General Training is

For work and migration

Australia accepts it for skilled visas, and Canada for permanent residence and citizenship. People also take it for work, or for a course below degree level.

Same listening and speaking

The listening and speaking tests are the same as in IELTS Academic. Only reading and writing are different.

Everyday reading and writing

You read notices, adverts and texts about work, and you write a letter and an essay.

The four skills

The whole test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes. Speaking can be on the same day as the rest, or up to a week before or after.

Questions fréquentes

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

Listening and speaking are the same in both. In General Training, the reading texts are about everyday life and work, and Writing Task 1 is a letter. In Academic, you read longer texts on academic topics and describe a chart in Task 1.

Which IELTS do I need for a visa?

For an Australian skilled visa, you can use either test. For Canadian permanent residence and citizenship, Canada accepts General Training, not Academic. A university usually asks for Academic, so check before you book.

Is General Training reading easier?

The texts are easier, but you need more correct answers for the same band. For example, band 6.0 needs 30 correct answers in General Training and 23 in Academic.

Is IELTS General Training practice free here?

Yes, you can start for free with your email, and there's no card. Your first band score for speaking and for each writing task is free. Pro adds feedback on every speaking and writing answer.
